Handwriting recognition has been one of the grand challenges of AI. Printed text has predictale fonts and letter shapes, but each handwriting is different and there is considerable variation when the same person writes the same letter. Some techniques work on an image of the text, but it is easer if the path of the pen or stylus is recorded as it happens.
